The A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1, reference 101.031, is one of the most historically significant and immediately recognisable watches in the history of fine watchmaking, the reference that announced the rebirth of the Saxon manufacture on 24 October 1994 and that has defined Lange's design philosophy for three decades. This certified pre-owned example is offered in excellent condition and is presented as watch only.
Crafted in 18k rose gold, the 101.031 presents the Lange 1 in its classic 38.5mm round case measuring 10mm in height, with a warm, luminous case that frames one of the most celebrated asymmetric dial layouts ever created. The quick-correction button for the outsize date, discreetly positioned at 10 o'clock on the case band, is a detail that exemplifies Lange's obsession with both mechanical ingenuity and user experience.
The black dial is organised around the Lange 1's defining asymmetric architecture, with an off-centre hour and minute subdial dominating the left side, a small seconds subdial at 4 o'clock, and the Lange outsize date displayed through twin windows at 1 o'clock in a format so legible and so refined that it has never been improved upon. A power reserve indicator at 3 o'clock completes a dial composition of extraordinary functional clarity and visual balance that required immense discipline to create and has never been replicated with quite the same conviction by any other manufacture.
Powering the watch is the A. Lange & Söhne Calibre L901.0, a fully in-house manually wound movement with 365 components, three-quarter plate in German silver, hand-engraved balance cock, Glashütte stripe and perlage finishing throughout, and an impressive 72-hour power reserve. A movement so beautifully finished that the sapphire crystal caseback feels less like a design decision and more like a moral obligation.
