The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona "Patrizzi", reference 16520, is perhaps the single most celebrated and coveted vintage Rolex reference in the current collector market, a watch that combines the legendary Zenith El Primero-based movement with the extraordinarily rare and distinctive "Patrizzi" dial configuration, named after the legendary watch auctioneer Osvaldo Patrizzi who famously wore one. This certified pre-owned example from 1995 is offered in very good condition and comes with its full original set, including box, papers, and all original accessories.
Crafted entirely in stainless steel, the 16520 presents the Cosmograph Daytona in a commanding 40mm Oyster case with screw-down pushers, Triplock crown, and a stainless steel tachymeter bezel. The first modern Daytona, introduced in 1988 with an automatic movement, and the reference that transformed the Daytona from a slow seller into the most desirable Rolex ever made. An entirely different proposition in 1995 than it is today, and worth every second of the wait.
The white "Patrizzi" dial is the defining and irreplaceable feature of this example. A small number of early 16520 dials developed an extraordinary oxidation effect on the lacquer of the three chronograph subdials, turning them from their original creamy white to a rich, warm brown or chocolate tone over time, creating an effect so unique and so beautiful that it was named after its most famous wearer. No two "Patrizzi" dials are identical, and no amount of money can create one artificially. This is a dial that only time can produce.
Powering the watch is the Rolex Calibre 4030, a heavily modified version of the legendary Zenith El Primero, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with 17 jewels and a column wheel chronograph mechanism delivering the smooth, precise operation that defines the finest vintage Daytona references.
The watch is fitted with the Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock safety clasp.
